Schlechte Daten-Banken

Diese Meldung, liebe Wirtschaftsjournalisten, ist so magisch, dass Ihr sie keinesfalls totrecherchieren solltet.

Bei Japans Banken verschwinden hunderttausende Kontendaten in hunderten von Filialen, und das nicht nur von irgendwelchen Festplatten, sondern auch aus Mikrofilm-Archiven.

Bitte keinen weiteren Hintergrund dazu, bitte, der alles entzaubern könnte.

Der Herr Lumma und seine prima Firma haben eigentlich nie Zeit. Irgendwie aber, und wie genau, das nehmen wir besser mit ins Grab, haben wir es geschafft, die Herren Genies dazu zu bewegen, endlich auch so eine schicke Technorati-Tabelle zu erstellen.

Wirklich große Neuigkeiten

Joshua Schachter, der bisher - so viel wir wissen - in der Finanzwelt gearbeitet hat, macht del.icio.us zu seinem neuen Job. Das wurde höchste Zeit.

Wir testen dank des Hinweises von Janko immer noch spurl als Alternative zu furl. Ausführliches Posting folgt. Zum Anwärmen sei schon einmal auf diese prima Analyse bei irox hingewiesen.

RSS-Feed für GPS-Position

Unsere kleine Gebetsmühle, in zwei Jahren reden alle davon, und Ihr habt es hier zuerst gelesen: Der Ort wird die nächste Großwanwendung der Social Software. Es wird RSS-Ströme für die Orte der Freunde geben. Könnte bitte mal jemand eine Firma gründen? (Jetzt warten wir gespannt auf den Kommentar: Gibt es schon fünf, Herzchen.)

Fällt uns grad ein, weil wir dieses Tool zum automatischen Austausch von Positionen sehen.

Wirklich ganz hervorragende Übersicht über die mannigfaltigen Tools, die es zu del.icio.us mittlerweile gibt. Als Furlistas werden wir da ganz neidisch. Gleich das Multipost Tool installiert, das parallel Furlt und deliriert.

C-64-Sounddateien auf RFID-Chips speichern. Whoa.

Dividuum, my flat-mate, has built a very cool RFID application. He stores SID-files (SID is the music format for the C64) on RFID tags. When you put such a tag near to the reader, the music is played on the stereo.

Cargo Cult

Hm. Uns war nicht klar, dass der Cargo Cult wirklich existierte.

Bisher dachten wir, das sei eine lustige Erfindung von Richard Feynman, der in einer Rede den Begriff Cargo Cult Science benutzte.

Nun erfahren wir in einem Nebensatz beim von uns auf Knien verherten Language Log, dass es dazu einen länglichen Wikipedia-Eintrag gibt, der den Cargo Cult verschiedener Inselbewohner beschreibt:

In attempts to get cargo to fall by parachute or land in planes or ships again, islanders adopted a shallow version of the same practices they had seen the soldiers, sailors and airmen use. They carved headphones from wood, and wore them while sitting in control towers. They waved the landing signals while standing on the runways. The experiment started on Monday, October 25, 2004 and lasted till Friday, November 5, 2004. Two different kinds of UHF tags were used: 950MHz passive tags attached to kids' school backs that are read at the gate of the school to activate a digital camera that takes pictures of kids and automatically send them via email to parents' mobile phones. 300MHz active tags are embedded in wrist bands that are worn by kids. When kids enter a potentially dangerous area, the system also sends picture messages to parents. 92% of the schools' 172 students participated in the experiment.

Flickrization and daytime ethics

My third and last entry on this.

1. Now flickr officially announced that they have been bought by yahoo.

2. I heard this some days ago from a very trustworthy source and posted it here.

3. After that I apologized for my posting - because I realized that spreading unconfirmed rumours does collide with my daytime ethics as a journalist. (Thank you.)

4. I didn't apologize because I thought the information was wrong.

5. I (hopefully) learned a lot about blogging in the last weeks. I'll write a lengthy essay on the difference between blogs and journalism for a magazine mainly covering media standards. Stay tuned.

6. I am very happy to hear that flickr will stay on it's way to conquer the world. :-)

Volksmedien

Jeff Jarvis likes the term Volksmedien I used in my Focus story about, uhm, well, We-Media like flickr, del.icio.us, last.fm. I really had the

funky, retro, populist, Volkswagen feel, of course, with that buggy attitude

in mind. But I can also understand that some Germans do not like it. (Some do , some aren't sure:-)

There's no doubt that when newsmashing takes off, the mainstream media will not be amused. But maybe newspaper mash-up artists will follow the career path of music mashers. At first, record labels tried to sue them out of existence. Now, they court mashers as trend-setting viral marketers. The Times has a chance to leap ahead of the curve. When Daniel Okrent leaves on May 31, the NYT should hire Josh Marshall or Andrew Sullivan to remix the paper of record. Who needs a public editor when you can have a public newsmasher?

Flickr deal confirmed by source

This time, dear readers, we are nearly the first to confirm that flickr really has been bought by yahoo for around 40 million $. (Very well-informed source.)

*Update*: We apologize for this entry. Please ignore. It does not comply with any journalistic standards. (Doesn't matter how well-informed our source is - there was no additional research or fact checking involved on our side.) This is not a professional but a strictly private weblog. Nevertheless it shouldn't be the place for unconfirmed rumours. So at least we have learned something we should have known all the time.
